Between February and April of 1973, hundreds of reports were made to local law enforcement and newspapers of unexplained aerial phenomena in Piedmont and surrounding area. The incidents quickly gained attention, making headlines locally before eventually being covered by national news outlets and bringing well know investigators and scientists to the area who were able to verify the validity of the sightings.
To honor the 50th anniversary of these reported unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings, the Missouri General Assembly passed SB139 in 2023, officially designating Piedmont and Wayne County as the UFO Capital of Missouri.
In the spring of 2024, the Piedmont UFO Capital of Missouri Park was established to commemorate Piedmont's unique history and its connection to these historic events.
